Content of Course
The course introduces students to practical accounting and covers the preparation of a set of financial statements from source documents, via the nominal ledger and trial balance. The majority of the course consists of a detailed case study, completed on Excel. The week concentrates on the practical problems that will be encountered by trainees over the first few months of their career.
The course covers by use of lectures and case studies:
- the principles of double entry bookkeeping;
- books of prime entry;
- the nominal ledger and control accounts;
- trial balance;
- effective use of Excel to analyse and manage basic accounting data;
- introduction to VAT and other forms taxation affecting business financial statements;
- basic format of financial statements;
- interpretation and analysis of financial statements;
- documentation of accounts preparation assignments;
- incomplete records.
There is no required prior knowledge for this course.
