Charity Commission Gets Tough on Whistleblowing

The Charity Commission has a summary of the action they have taken in response to auditors and professional examiners failing to report 'matters of material significance' direct to the Commission. In this they remind auditors and independent examiners that any modification to their report (including emphasis of matter) must be reported direct to the Commission as soon as practical. The Commission has also issued the following warning:
[In future] we intend simply to refer non-compliant auditors (and professional independent examiners) to their professional body without prior notification or warning.
HAT's Charities Manual already contains this warning to ensure that reports are made to the Commission. However, it is important that firms ensure all relevant staff are aware of these requirements. Otherwise firms may face unwelcome investigations from their regulator, responding to a formal complaint by the Commission.
