Ian Atkins BA FCA FCCA

Managing Director

Ian Atkins

Ian has been Managing Director of HAT since 1991, having joined us from Ernst and Young in 1985. Ian is known for his clear practical approach to dealing with issues relevant to our member firms and specialises in practice management and procedures, as well as teaching ‘soft skills’.

Roles and Responsibilities

As well as running the company, Ian’s role includes:

  • Advising member firms on audit compliance
  • Assisting member firms in preparing for inspections from the ICAEW/ACCA/ICAS
  • Conducting annual Practice Assurance / Audit Compliance Reviews for member firms
  • Presenting our quarterly technical update meetings
  • Carrying out quality control file reviews
  • Writing and presenting our Career Development (A to Gb) Courses
  • Practice efficiency consultancy
  • Chair of our student and student liaison committees

Ian graduated from the University of Kent in accounting and law in 1978 before joining Ernst & Young. He qualified first time and after progressing to audit supervisor, joined the national training department on a 20 month secondment before being promoted to audit manager. Ian is a member of the ICAEW, ICAS and the ACCA.

Ian's hobbies include watching Southend United, Speedway, collecting number one hit singles, travelling, visiting houses and castles, gardening, theatre, concerts, and cycling. Ian is a member of the 92 Club, having visited all the current football league grounds, and in February 2010, extended this to cover the 24 additional National League grounds to form a 116 club. He is also a member of CAMRA, National Trust & English Heritage and also has all the number 1 UK singles since the chart started in 1952 sadly not all on original formats and now downloads them each Friday burning them onto a disc.
